Mysterious Background of Sydney Mason (Page: 3502)
Mystery Surrounds the background of Sydney Herbert Mason.
Sydney was born in 1879 in Everton Victoria a tiny township between Wangaratta and Bright with a population of about 250.
The are three different stories of his background.
- His daughter Kathleen told that Sydney was an orphan and new nothing about his parents. He was adopted as a child and raised by Mr and Mrs Kirkham. She did not know the circumstances surrounding his adoption .
- Sydney’s Marriage and Death certificates show his parents as John Mason and Elizabeth Reid.
Historical records imply a different story…..
- A birth certificate has been located for Sydney Herbert Mason born in Everton in June 1879. The certificate shows the mother as Hannah Mason and the father as being unknown. Hannah’s age is given as 27 years.
- A marriage certificate in April 1884 shows Hannah Mason married George Kirkham in Everton. Hannah was aged 31 years. George was aged 22 years.
- The death certificate of Hannah Kirkham (Mason) gives the informant as S.H.Mason of 21 Brunel Street Essendon. There is no other mention of Sydney on the certificate.
