Water colour paintings owned by the Collins family

  • Keith Collins purchased two painting by Albert Namatjira about 1940 while stationed in Alice Springs and serving with the CMF as part of the “Darwin Overland Maintenance Group”.
  • Rex Battersby lived next door to the officer’s mess located on the Todd river. Rex is said to have “discovered” Albert Namatjira and was acting as his agent at the time.
  • When purchased the paintings were rolled up and posted to Keith’s wife, Kathleen Collins in Essendon.
  • Both paintings were sold by auctioneers Leonard Joel as part of Kathleen’s estate in 2014 for a total of $ 51,000.
