Lost Family Fortune

£ 200,000,000 ?

Notes written by Maurice Cowell tell of a family inheritance stored in Chancery in England that would be released with proof of provenance.

Information from Sandra Cowell:

  • I heard about the chancery money from one of dad’s cousins, Beryl at a funeral of someone and afterwards at Aunty Ivy’s. She also told me about the family.
  • Beryl told me she did her thesis on Joshua Henry Cowell who lived in the 1860’s who was a parliamentarian which she did at La Trobe uni.
  • Beryl also told me the chancery money came from Captain Kidd the pirate as his daughter wanted to marry a Cowell and he was against it and told her she wouldn’t inherit anything.

The first note from Maurice:

  • “My father’s uncle was named Albert Edward Cowell who was my godfather. I would like to know his connection with ancestors. pertaining to fortune held in chancery in England, at least at 1930 £ 40,000,000”
  • That could amount to £ 200,000,000 in 2030

The second note from Maurice:

  • “He often told me of a fortune held in trust in Chancery in England, he spent a lot of time and money trying to trace the family tree to make a claim on it but he never succeeded, From memory the trust fund was worth £ 40,000,000”

Money In Chancery

  • The Court of Chancery looks after money and property awarded through the court to people who cannot be found, or are unable to look after it themselves.
  • This can include amounts bequeathed in a will to descendants that cannot be located.
